Deuter's Futura 25 SL Review

Written by: Rowan Rocskar

I spent my 13-month maternity leave going on hikes through Kananaskis and Banff National Park with my daughter, and grew very fond of my Deuter Kid Comfort. Now that she’s a toddler, she will gladly stay home with her dad for a day so I can enjoy a hike with friends. This meant that I needed a daypack that would fit the bill for hikes on my own, as well as hikes with the family. Enter the Deuter Futura 25L SL. The compact and versatile day pack that has it all, and then some.

The Basics

The Deuter Futura 25L SL weighs an impressive 2.6 lbs, and even stuffed to the brim with gear, my shoulders never felt any pressure. The SL is specifically designed for women with a shorter back, and narrower shoulder straps and the Aircomfort back system ensures that you have maximum airflow. The pack is made from 50% recycled material, is free from PFCs (which are harmful to people and the planet), and is bluesign certified. To the touch, it feels very durable and doesn’t pick up dirt when out on adventures.

Amazing Value for the Price

Coming in at $199, there are packs that are less expensive, but you’ll be missing out on some of the awesome features that the 25 SL has. The Arc’teryx Mantis 26 is $130, and while it does have an additional 5L of storage, you’ll be missing out on a lot of features that the Deuter Futura 25L SL has (back ventilation, hip pockets, rain cover, etc.). The Thule Alltrail Hiking Backpack 25L is also $130, and has a few more features than the Mantis, but nothing beats the Deuter Aircomfort system for back ventilation.

Features I Love About the Futura 21L SL

  • Hip pockets are stretchy mesh, and fit my iPhone 12 Pro with the case on (impressive compared to other leading brands!)
  • The side stretch pockets are great for water bottles, or other gear that you want to have readily available (like the Therm-a-Rest Z Seat)
  • The front mesh pocket is perfect for soggy gear like a towel after you’ve gone for a dip in an alpine lake
  • The back ventilation is top-of-the-line, which means ultimate comfort and breathability (aka no sweaty back!)
  • Hiking pole holder (it’s surprising how few packs have these!)
  • There’s important safety reminders printed on the inside of the pack
  • There are many storage compartments to keep things organized and safe
  • The included rain cover is located in a separate pocket at the bottom of the pack
  • It’s compatible with a 3L water bladder

The Verdict?

I would recommend this pack to anyone that is in the market for a versatile daypack for hiking!

Futura 25 SL - Womens

$199.95

The lightweight, technical Futura SL hiking backpack is specifically designed for women. With a shorter back, narrower shoulder straps and conical shaped hip fins, the Futura SL creates a solid, secure fit around the back and hips. The new-style mesh on the Aircomfort back system creates maximum airflow across the back for athletic hiking. The stretch mesh front pocket is great for airing wet clothes on the move (after a quick dip in a mountain stream, for example).
