Gear Review: KEEN Targhee IV Mid Waterproof Hiking Boots

Review & Photos By: Susanne Cupido (@the.cupidos)

Is there one article of clothing or gear that is so important to always have with you no matter the adventure? For me, it’s a good pair of hiking boots. There’s just something about the worn leather where each scuff and crease tells a story about all the conquered trails and peaks.

Recently, I’ve had the privilege to test out the KEEN Targhee IV Mid Waterproof (WP) hiking boots and from the moment I took them on their first 400 m elevation hike, I was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable my feet felt; not a single blister or sore feet. This is because KEEN specifically designed their footwear to be wide at the forefoot, so that there is generous space for toes to spread out which is important on many terrains.

KEEN Technology

One of the most notable features of the Targhee IV Mid WP boots is their waterproof construction thanks to the KEEN.Dry technology. These boots are made with a waterproof, breathable membrane which effectively keeps water out while still allowing your feet to breathe. This is especially important in wet or muddy conditions, as it helps to keep your feet dry and blister-free, even after many hours of hiking.

In addition to their waterproof construction, the Targhee IV Mid WP boots also offer excellent support and stability which I noticed on my hikes. Their multi-directional lug pattern and tread allowed me to confidently tackle a variety of terrain, from rocky slopes to muddy trails. They have a sturdy midsole made of compression-molded EVA foam, which provides cushioning and shock absorption for your feet. The boots also have a removable insole for added stability and support known as KEEN.Luftcell, which is a solvent-free, air injected innovation that reduces polyurethane and provides a durable, excellent cushioning and arch support.

In terms of durability, these hiking boots are built to last and are KEEN’s most durable Targhee boot that they claim, “will be the last hiking boot you’ll buy”. They feature a rugged leather upper that is both abrasion-resistant and flexible, allowing for a natural range of motion as you walk. These boots also have a KEEN.Protect rubber toe cap and heel guard which provides extra protection from rocks, roots and other hazards along the trail. Along my hike, especially areas where there are many roots sticking out or loose rocks, I didn’t notice any impact on my toes at all, which is very different from the other brands of hiking boots that I own, where I feel the impact instantly.

Sizing

One thing to note is that due to the wider toe box mentioned above, it is recommended that you go half a size up for the Targhee IV Mid WP hiking boots. I spent a while trying to figure out what size would work for me but after some help from the Valhalla Pure Outfitters staff and KEEN representative we were able to determine the correct sizing for me; I am usually a 7.5 and was recommended a size 8 which fit perfectly.

Overall Favourite Features

  1. Wide toe box
  2. High Ankle Support
  3. Rubber Toe Cap
  4. Extremely waterproof
  5. They match my toddlers KEEN hiking boots

Conclusion

The KEEN Targhee IV Mid Waterproof hiking boots are a testament to the brand's commitment to quality and performance. They are a versatile choice for any outdoor adventure, whether you're tackling a mountain peak or exploring your local wilderness. They offer a perfect balance of comfort, durability, and performance, making them a top pick for hikers of all skill levels.

I can’t wait to lace these hiking boots up again for another journey and fill them with many new experiences, new adventures, and a lifetime's worth of stories waiting to be told.
