Modular Warmth: How the Kombi Mitt System Performs in Canadian Winters

Written by: Julia (@ben_ventures)

Living in the North has taught me the value of good layers, not just adding a fleece under a jacket, but true layering systems. That's why I was so excited to try the Kombi Climate Series Mitt System. Could this be the perfect mitt layering system? There's the liner gloves with touch screen capability. An insulated mitt for warmth, and the water resistant outer shell. But does this system hold up to Canadian winters? I tested them out on a road trip from rainy Vancouver Island to the bitter cold of Northern BC. Testing out the full spectrum of BC winters.

Let's break it down.

The Kombi Climate Series Mitt System is a 3-layer modular system that combines warmth, breathability, and water proof protection. First you have the Polartec Power Grid layer. Think of this as your long underwear, a breathable, quick dry under layer, that can be worn on its own in mild temperatures, or layered for the cold. With touch screen capability, it's perfect for when you need to use your fingers, but don't want them to freeze.

Next is the insulated mid-layer mitt. Think of this as your puffy jacket. A warm cozy layer, that's comfortable and light weight and perfect for layering. This mid-layer also has a handy self packing storage pouch that can store the whole system or be used as a convenient pocket for a credit card or emergency dog treats.

Last is the 3-layer laminated shell. This is your hard shell jacket that protects all your other layers. It's water and snow proof and will keep your hands dry, an essential for staying warm.

How this system holds up to BC winters.

I tested out this system first on Vancouver Island, which you may know is wet and even more wet in the winter. The liner gloves are lightweight and quick to dry, perfect for the mild temperatures of BCs west coast. They pair great with the outer layer, to provide a waterproof layer for those unending soggy days where you can't wait for the rain to stop to take the dog out. The outer layer can also be worn stand-alone for those days that really are just wet and you don't need any extra warmth.

As I headed North to Prince George, I was able to test out the midlayer mitt and it is incredibly cozy. It really is like your favourite puffy jacket for your hands. Lightweight, packable, and comfy, it works great on its own or paired with the other layers. The liner gloves are great for cold temperatures when you want to take pictures or need dexterity to clip in a dog leash. The mid-layer provides cozy warmth, and the outer layer provides waterproofing, which is perfect if you have a dog that demands you throw them snowballs, no matter how cold it is. The outer layer has an easy pull tab so it fits nice and snug and can be manipulated easily with mitts on.

I found that when using all the layers they could be a bit cumbersome to put on, but the versatility is unparalleled. If you want one system that works in mild wet weather, and in cold, dry climates, this is the system for you. The Kombi Climate Series Mitt System works for coastal temperate winters and the cold of Northern BC.
