There's something magic about that moment when you're about to head somewhere new – whether it's a quick weekend getaway or a trip across the globe, the excitement is real. I've traveled everywhere from the beaches of Hawaii to mountain adventures in my own backyard in British Columbia, all the way to the deserts of Morocco. And through all those different destinations, I've learned that the right gear really does make or break a trip.
If you've got travelers in your life (or you're planning your own adventure), these gear picks are my go-to items that I actually pack every time – practical, reliable, and perfect whether you're road tripping or catching an international flight. It’s the kind of gear that earns its place in your suitcase trip after trip.
1. Scarpa Kailash Plus GTX - Womens
I can't say enough good things about the Scarpa Kailash Plus GTX - Women's Hiking Boots. I've put serious kilometres on them – everything from day hikes in the Rockies to all-day walking tours through Moroccan cities – and they've never let me down.
The comfort is what sold me first. Right out of the box, minimal break-in needed. No hot spots, no blisters (which is huge for me because I'm prone to them). The cushioning keeps my feet happy even after hours of walking on pavement while traveling.
The Gore-Tex waterproofing actually works. I got caught in a surprise downpour on a trail in Waterton National Parks, trudged through muddy sections and even a shallow creek crossing – bone dry inside. That peace of mind is worth everything when you still have multiple days of travel.
Traction has been solid on every surface I've tested them on: wet rocks, loose gravel, slick roots, you name it. I feel confident and stable, which means I can focus on the scenery instead of worrying about my footing.
These have become my go-to for everything. Hiking obviously, but also exploring new cities, walking around all day at national parks, even just running errands when the weather's bad. If you're looking for one versatile boot that can handle it all, this is it.

2. Sea to Summit Comfort Blend Sleeping Bag Liner- Rectangular w. Pillow Sleeve
There's nothing like the awful feeling of being jet-lagged mixed with not getting a good night's sleep due to scratchy bedsheets or pillowcases. This Sea to Summit liner was a game changer – it felt like bringing a little bit of home along with its super soft, cozy material.
The Comfort Blend fabric makes a huge difference when you're exhausted and just need to sleep. The pillow sleeve is genius too – slip it over whatever questionable pillow you're dealing with and suddenly it's actually comfortable.
Best part? It packs down incredibly small and lightweight, so it's easy to carry everywhere without taking up valuable space.
If you struggle with uncomfortable bedding while traveling, this creates a familiar, cozy barrier between you and mystery hotel sheets. Makes getting decent sleep on the road so much easier.

3. Deuter Futura 30 SL - Womens
As someone who refuses to check bags (because lost luggage is my worst nightmare), this pack has been perfect. It fits everything I need for weeks of travel, and all the compartments keep me organized. The hipbelt is a lifesaver on long walking days – it actually takes the weight off my shoulders when I'm hauling it through airports or hiking to my accommodation. And that off-the-back panel? Total game changer in humid places. I've used this backpacking in the desert heat of New Mexico, Texa, and Arizona and my back wasn't a sweaty mess like it would be with other packs. It's become my go-to for any trip where I want to stay mobile and stress-free.

4. GEAR AID Heroclip Carabiner - Medium
This little gadget has saved me so many times. You know that moment in a sketchy gas station or at the airport bathroom when you're trying to figure out where to put your bag because the floor is... questionable? The Heroclip hooks onto the stall door and holds my pack up off the ground – total relief. I also use it constantly in hostels and hotels that somehow have zero hooks. My towel, daypack, or jacket just clips onto a bunk rail, chair, or door edge. It's one of those things that seems simple until you're in the situation where you really need it, and then you're so glad it's clipped to your bag. Lightweight, sturdy, and way more useful than I expected.
5. The North Face Terra Lumbar 6L
This has become my constant companion while exploring new places. It sits perfectly on my hips or shoulder and keeps everything I need – phone, wallet, snacks, sunscreen – right where I can grab it without taking the pack off. I love that my essentials stay close to my body, especially when I'm navigating crowded markets or busy train stations. The adjustable straps are clutch too – I place my water bottle on one side or I can secure a light jacket on the other when the weather changes. It's the perfect size for day trips and wandering around cities without feeling weighed down. Hands-free and everything accessible – exactly what I need when I'm on the move.
